Head of Engineering Delivery

We are looking for a seasoned Head of Engineering Delivery that can enthuse and guide global teams of developers, and quality engineers, working in different streams. You will be the primary point of contact for Engineering Delivery, working alongside Engineering Operations Engineering. DevOps, Architecture and Data, with the development managers for regions and functional areas, reporting into you. You set the technical direction for your area, and make sure that the correct technologies, practises and processes are followed and used where appropriate, that code is fit for purpose and, working in tandem with other Senior Engineering Managers, you will be responsible for reporting initiatives, OKRs and general progress and direction of the Engineering team, to the VP Engineering.

As Head of Engineering Delivery you will be responsible for

• Work within the Engineering management team to lead the capabilities in your area, and significantly contribute to medium-to-large feature development releases
• Will need to act as a technical product owner when necessary to create technical requirements and act as a senior stakeholder or customer representative on technical projects.
• Review and be responsible for documentation and evaluation of the current system and technical processes.
• Direct and manage usage of technical documentation repositories and systems, such as JIRA and Confluence.
• Interview new talent for the Engineering group
• Drive solutions to meet security/compliance adherence
• Responsible for security and governance of code, along with managing and keeping on top of, critical vulnerabilities and software licensing, especially for open-source libraries.
• Responsible for the review of development quality performed in the teams. Managing code quality and volume, as well as overviewing code governance, for memory leaks, improper use of memory management, multi-threaded principles etc.
• Working with the Architecture team, lead the data solution design from the front, with experience and understanding of complex event-driven, scaled data mastery techniques.
• Be always mindful of system performance and the pursuit of improvement.
• Conduct insightful, comprehensive code and design reviews with capability managers
• Buy in and be a leader in our Agile methodology.
• Contribute to the encompass engineering community - providing technical leadership, coaching and mentoring the team, promoting knowledge sharing and adoption of good practice
• Report progress and provide any metrics or reports required to support the team
• Champion quality, continually improve team processes and participate in our philosophy of continuous improvement.
• Keep your saw sharp by staying current with up-to-date developments and best practices within software engineering, testing and automation.

Your Background and Experience

You will have worked previously in a similar function leading the delivery of applications and systems, managing the quality and delivery of SaaS programmes of work.
You will have come up through the ranks and have been a senior developer in your past, (you are not expected to do any hands-on development in this role). You will need to be able to understand complex technical issues and make decisions quickly and accurately. You will have a highly collaborative attitude to direction and have success in mentoring and developing different teams.

You will have the ability to delve into the existing code, understanding its issues and failings, and working with the architects, and developers to document those, and then work with the other engineering capability leads, to plan out and evolve the current systems into highly scalable, cloud distributed, secure and efficient systems.
You will drive performance through measured improvement and KPIs. and will be responsible for the visibility of work and measures within your team.

• A proven background in leading teams through mentoring, and collaboration, taking the team on a journey through persuasion, rather than laying down the law.
• Extensive experience having successfully delivered multiple projects that span the software development lifecycle.
• Understanding expert language-agnostic development concepts such as memory management, memory structures, distributed processing, and distributed cache mechanisms. Be a champion for distributed computing.
• Extensively worked with and developed microservices and serverless functions
• Demonstrable experience in designing, implementing, and debugging complex software components.
• Experience breaking monolith applications into data-driven efficient and scalable systems.
• Experience of complex data projects using event-driven architectures, using systems such as Kafka, Avro.
• Experience working in an Agile environment
• Demonstrable expertise in a specific technical area (e.g. system performance, database technology, distributed systems)
• JIRA, Confluence and Jira Service Management
